With the frost hitting the ground this cool winter our latest exhibition 'A Touch of (Gold) Frost' couldn't be more appropriate. Featuring a range of works, including a few special pieces with 18kt gold leaf, 'A Touch of Gold Frost' showcases the work of Auckland based graphic illustrator and artist, Ema Frost.
Ema's unique style merges the myths of Maori folklore with the clean lines and bright colours found in Japanese contemporary art. Part of the magic of Ema's work is in the little idiosyncrasies that can be found only upon closer inspection of her images: look carefully and you’ll see little characters peeking out from unsuspecting places and the omniscient Tiki watermark that protects all life in the enchanted world of her imagination.
This year Ema has experimented with gold and silver leafing to add a special kind of je ne sais quoi to her images. First revealed at the New Zealand Art Show in June, the magic of the gold and silver touch is in the way the pieces transform during the day as the light reflects off the precious metal. This is yet another way Ema has found to breathe life into her characters as they move from the world of her imagination to ours.
There seems to have been a touch of Frost in a myriad of diverse media capillaries throughout New Zealand this year; The Whitakers Easter Egg Hunt, took an Ema Frost Bespoke Egg to Christchurch, followed by a feature on Good Morning as an artist to look out for at the biannual Chromacon exhibition, which coincided with a spread in Women’s Day, and being pride of place at the Auckland Memorial Museum.
'A Touch of (Gold) Frost' opens 15 July and runs through to the end of September. The exhibition features a variety of framed and unframed prints and a couple of originals. The images are supplemented by a small selection of cards and reuse able coffee cups to ensure whatever your budget you can take a touch of Frost home with you
