Based in Whanganui, Katie Brown is one of New Zealand’s foremost female glass-blowers. Always creatively inclined, Katie had the opportunity to study three different art diplomas but it was seeing the hot glass in action that cemented her career course, a career entering it's 20th year. While studying for her Diploma in Glass Design and Production, Katie met internationally renowned American glass artist Josh Simpson, and was invited to travel to Massachusetts to become part of his glassmaking team upon graduation.
After 3 years Katie moved to England where she worked with several glass makers, one of them being environmental glass artist Neil Wilkin. The experience of working and travelling with hot glass furthered Katie's passion and on her return to New Zealand she set up Chronicle Glass with Lyndsay Patterson and Karen Ellett.
After 12 successful years the trio sold the studio to the local council to remain a hot glass studio for the community. A new mother to baby Neko, Katie is back to work and looking forward to focusing on more one off projects and continuing to stock galleries in New Zealand and overseas. Much of Katie's work is inspired by the natural world and this is reflected within her use of hot glass; her use of colour and cold techniques gives her pieces a delicate sense of structure.
