'Saffron Offering' is part of an ongoing series of works by Greg Swinburne started in 2001, and representing a period of spiritual searching by the artist:
"I have always admired Japanese art and was looking for an excuse to study in that area. There is a close connection between all the arts in Japan, so I was able to draw on several to achieve what I wanted. I mainly looked at gardens, Ikebana and calligraphy."

Greg Swinburne was born and raised in Wanganui where he gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in glass and Dip glass design in 2002. Post graduation Greg worked as a studio assistant to several well known glass artists including Katie Brown, Peter Viesnik and Lynden Over.
Greg has always admired Japanese art and used glass as an excuse to study in that area - there is a close connection between all the arts in Japan and Greg mainly found himself inspired by gardens, Ikebana and calligraphy. He describes his approach as a sculptural mindset: the Offering sculptures originally had the subtitle “sculpture for a zen garden” and the vessels and bowls employ similar visual language to sculptures.
