The Artist: Simon Ormerod
From working as an apprentice in a slaughterhouse to creating quirky monsters and personable robots under the moniker ‘Cracked Ink’ Simon Ormerod’s life has taken many turns.
Born in the UK, Simon had a short career as a conveyor belt fitter apprentice before choosing to return to college and gain a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Graphic Design from the University of Lancaster. During his time at uni, Simon drew inspiration from several art movements but derived the most fascination from street art and its use of different mediums.
Moving to New Zealand in 2006, Simon formed his artistic brand ‘Cracked Ink’ – encompassing his playful characters, experimental mediums and clever wit. Predominately using the street as his canvas, Simon continuously pushes his creative boundaries. His characters, often drawn in sketchbooks before making it on to larger canvases such as buildings, are inspired by human expressions and emotions and can be found on large surfaces across the country.
