Flying fish and gothic lighthouses combine with the harsh environments of New Zealand in the work of Mary Anderson.
Based on the West Coast of the South Island, Mary's work blends the wild landscape with her inner landscape; the resulting work combines the environment and environmental issues with imaginings, dreams and personal symbols.
Describing her creative process as similar to going for a walk (usually alone, early in the morning through spiders webs and sheets of rain) Mary brings her images to life through pencil, watercolours, oils and printmaking techniques. Elements of her favourite walk along the clifftops near her home where she walks through the subtropical bush, aki-aki and nikau palms all make their way into her work. This walk often takes her to her 'thinking place' a place where the track drops down through the flax and windblown scrub, to a headland, a spiritual place circled with offshore islands, where cormorants fly in big loops. It is this 'thinking place' that many of Mary's images begin in the hope that we can preserve the places we love.
