Each year Quirky Fox challenges a small selection of artists to move away from canvas and paper to create a unique piece of art for their Christmas group show.
This year our artists were challenged to transform houses formed from rewarewa (NZ honeysuckle) to create artworks suitable to sit on a table or mantle rather than hang on the wall.
Bec Robertson has transformed her houses in her recognisable own style. Featuring a tauhou (silvereye) on a pale blue background, negative detailing gives the illusion of native fauna and allows the grain of the rewarewa to be part of the work.
Dimensions: 100mm (w) x 190mm (w) x 120mm (d)
Medium: Acrylic, rewarewa
Award-winning New Zealand artist, Bec Robertson enjoys infusing art with a sense of quirkiness and humour. Growing up in the Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa before leaving for overseas, Bec lived in London, Singapore and even in the rainforest of Cairns. Here Bec lived for several years with no electricity, surrounded by Australian wildlife – the perfect creative space to observe and draw/paint.
Bec’s interest in peacocks was established in 2012 after an illustration course. She soon found it a dynamic creative subject matter which lends itself to a quirky disposition and experimental ideas. There are many different layers to work with - colour, beauty and the peacock’s perceived aloofness which makes its follies appear even more curious and amusing. Bec uses mixed media: ink, coloured pencil, watercolour and collage. This technique allows vibrant contrast with the sharp edge of the collage and the paint against the soft pencil palette.
Aside from a flow of peacock commissions Bec’s most recent works have been exploring pen and ink illustration with intricate watercolour collage to create a unique art piece.
Bec lives in Orakei, with her husband, two children and ‘Ziggy’ a gorgeous schnauzer.
