Rx - the Healing Qualities of Art
Celebrating 12 years in business should be a happy event, and for most businesses it is, however for Quirky Fox, the occasion has been slightly marred by unfortunate circumstances.
Eighteen months ago, we decided on the theme for our twelfth anniversary: ‘Rx’ an abbreviation in medical fields for prescription or remedy. It seemed a fitting title to celebrate the history of the building that would be our new home.
Quirky Fox anticipated moving in January 2023 to what would become our brand-new location, which was originally occupied by the first chemist in town. The chemist even came with a colourful history, with former owners including Ezekiel Fake and the equally delightfully named G. Strange.
Renovations to the building were set to be completed in December 2023, and we felt confident that an exhibition paying homage to the history of the building would be thematically on point.
Time passed and our grand re-opening continued inching ever-closer, however repeatedly unexpected renovation delays caused us - with less than a month to go - to pull the pin (quite fortunately with the blessing of our artists) and celebrate in a different way.
This article was previously written and far more upbeat in nature, as it was pulled together to acknowledge Quirky Fox’s exciting new history-steeped location. Despite our greatest efforts, it has proven difficult to change the brief for an exhibition that has been 18 months in the making, with Rx-themed works already fully conceived/executed by the artists and shipped directly to Quirky Fox.
Then inspiration struck. The reason why I originally started Quirky Fox was as an escape from a previously uninspiring career path. I simply just wanted to take refuge in the beauty of art.
Art has always been a remedy, for myself and others. It serves as a soul-soothing departure from the mundanity of everyday life, a means of therapy, and a form of communication that stretches across cultures and languages.
It is used as a means to heal, to express and to protest.
Art is a partial remedy for the ugliness of everyday life. And with that, ‘Rx’ was reborn.
