Artist Statement:

‘The Botanist's Cut’ (sometimes used as the name for an apple that is cut in half horizontally) is a portrait of my daughter, Noemi, now, the title and theme of the show connected perfectly with the background of a piece I have wanted to create for a long time.

In 2012 we awaited the birth of our twins, we knew our daughter Noemi, was high risk as she had been diagnosed with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and the doctors gave her a 50/50 chance of survival at birth.

Thanks to Great Ormond Street hospital and a successful operation 3 months later we were ready to leave the hospital.

During that morning Noemi had started to feed for the first time on her own, I was giving her a bottle when she aspirated her milk and suddenly turned blue. We pulled the alarm and a team of doctors rushed into the room. They immediately cut her baby grow down the middle, which featured a red apple, and took her to ICU where she made a complete recovery.

The piece is simply a reflection on how far she has come as a person and what a huge influence she has on our lives.

Noemi is bright, resilient and fully in charge of her own destiny and is just a beautiful human. I wanted her to have a presence in the work and a confidence and an almost confrontational look as she has taken a bite from the apple. There is a garden of eden feel but without consequence.

My work constantly seeks strong female roles and my belief in the divine and intuitive power of the feminine hopefully shows through the elements within this work.

Carne Griffiths

Carne Griffiths’ artwork is born from a love of drawing and the journey of creating an image on the page.

Working primarily with calligraphy ink, graphite and liquids, such as tea and alcohol, he draws and then manipulates the drawn line.

After graduating from Maidstone College of Art, Carne served an apprenticeship and worked as a gold wire embroidery designer for 12 years. This background is part of the reason floral patterns, repetition and flow play a large part in his work.

Carne’s images explore both human and floral forms, figuratively and in an abstract sense. He is fascinated by the flow of line and the ‘invisible threads’ that connect us to the natural world. These may be considered lines of energy or spiritual connections between ourselves and our surroundings; his work is often an emotional response to images and situations encountered in daily life. These daily images are recorded in a dreamlike sense onto the page where physical boundaries are no longer important.

Carne’s work takes us on a journey of escapism, often focusing on scenes of awe and wonderment. They offer a sense of abandonment to the artist and to the viewer an invitation to share and explore this inner realm.
