The Roses of Kannauj
The Roses of Kannauj
Artist Statement:
Kannauj is a town in India where they still distill rose petals into rose oil.
Rose oil and rose water are used in many medicines and of course, beauty treatments. They have a calming influence particularly during pregnancy and birth.
The rose petals in Kannauj are exclusinvely from the Damask Rose, a rose brought to India by the mighty Mughal Empire in the 16th Century.
Whilst in India last year, many of the early Mughal mausoleums we visited had vibrant pink, sweetly smelling damask rose petals strewn thickly on the floors and tombs.
