Artist Statement:
“‘Well now that we have seen each other’ said the Unicorn.
‘If you’ll believe in me, I’ll believe in you’”.
’Believe in Me’ has been inspired by ‘Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There’ by Lewis Carrol.
I have read this book so many times, I love the strangeness, the duality and the random beautiful lines that continue to stay with me.
In my head, the characters of the lion and the unicorn have come to represent the two sides of a relationship; be it romantic, familial or formal. There is the side of the unicorn that is fantastical, and dreams beyond the ordinary world. They can cast aside rules and create something out of nothing. Then there is the strength and stoicism of the lion, the side that builds strong foundations and protects the ideas so that they can grow.
At some point in any of these relationships an agreement is made to believe in each other, and I think this line from the book encapsulates that feeling. While in the book the unicorn is talking to Alice (they both thought the other did not exist), it has always stayed with me as a heartfelt promise between tow very different creatures.

Rhiannon Mowat
Rhiannon Mowat is a practicing artist, illustrator and educator based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. With a focus on visual narrative and our connection to the natural environment, her work delves into the violence, fear and comfort that can be found in the beauty of nature. The themes of connection, animal and story are explored in her work, through combining the structure of narrative with the darkness and abstraction of the sublime.
