Justine Hawksworth
Spending time between Gisborne and Auckland, Justine Hawksworth uses unique “canvases” in the form of vintage maps, marine charts, wine staves, used oars and birch panels.
Working mainly in acrylic, Justine paints New Zealand fauna and fauna, and lace patterns over these “canvases” allowing the natural grain of the wood, or the topography of the map, to be features rather than hidden under paint.
This layering creates a connection between the viewer and Justine’s art: connecting fauna and flora to timber grains in oars, staves and birch panels, or identifying areas of personal significance in the case of maps and nautical charts.
